Orchestra

Here at Wintergreen, students have the opportunity to join the Orchestra in either 4th or 5th Grade. Orchestra class is held during the school day, twice a week. Students can choose from the violin, the viola, or the cello. We dive deep into how to confidently play their instrument, showcasing our progress at several performances throughout the year. Rehearsing together in Orchestra, students learn valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, resilience and confidence.

Ensemble playing also allows students to develop discipline, improve many cognitive skills such as problem solving and critical thinking. Through games, activities, and creative exercises we establish the ability to read music, follow musical notation, and hone our inner musician with ear training.

In order to learn and make progress quickly, students are expected to practice at home by reinforcing good habits. Practice sessions should last around 15 minutes for Beginning Orchestra students, and 20-30 minutes for Advanced Orchestra students.

In the Spring, students look forward to hosting a Car Wash fundraiser, and a fun adventure at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA.

In 5th Grade, students may be selected for a special group called Honors Orchestra. This ensemble holds extra after-school rehearsals, represents our school at the All-County Orchestra Clinic in April, and participates in a nursing home visit, a community service project, and other additional performances and activities from October through May.
