Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a competition for 4th and 5th graders. Students at Wintergreen will compete for 12 spots on our team. Our team will then go on to compete against other elementary Battle of the Books teams for the county title. The county's winning team will go on to compete in the Regional competition. Regional winners will compete in the State Competition in May.

Wintergreen's Battle of the Books Team members are  required to read all 16 books on the Elementary Battle of the Books List. In September, students will start taking quizzes on these titles as they finish reading the books. 

Here is a suggested timeline for reading and quizzing on the books from the EBOB list:

  • 5 books read and quizzed on by Sept. 30th (pro tip: start reading over the summer)
  • 4  additional books read and quizzed on by Oct. 31st (for a total of 9 books)
  • 4 additional books read and quizzed on by Nov. 25th (for a total of 13 books)
  • 3 additional books read and quizzed on by Dec. 19th (for a total of 16 books)

On Tuesday, Jan. 6th, we will hold try-outs afterschool until 4:00.  Students will be required to write a list of the titles and authors as written on the 25-26 EBOB list. They will take a quiz that tests their knowledge of all the books on the list and they will participate in a team “mock battle”.

Team members will be announced on Wednesday, Jan. 7th. 

Practices will be held on Mondays and Thursdays after school until 4:00. 

Competition dates will be announced in the Fall of 2025.
